Most web masters will agree that building a diverse set of back links can be done by: article submissions, directory submissions, forum posting, blog posting, and even social book marking. These are all great ways to build links and I suggest that anybody that wants to increase their page ranking in the search engines to do these tasks. Others have chosen a different method of getting links. These people have done what I like to call the “being a jerk link building method”. I wrote this article to let you know what this method of link building entails and to give you the pros and cons of using such a method.

You’ll find that this method is as basic as creating something controversial so that people will make back links to your site showing the world what you have done. This method will make your web site infamous rather than famous, but it will get you a lot of quick links. For instance, you could make a page on your web site that shows video footage of you kicking kittens until your legs get too tired to kick any more. Many people will link to this site to show your video of you kicking kittens, but most people will not be doing it because they like you or want to recommend your product. The exception to this would be if your selling a service that gets rid of kittens. However, if your website is trying to sell cell phones and you randomly put up a video of you kicking kittens to get links, this would be a good example.

This method will get you lots of links in a very short period of time. You’ll find that all sorts of people will want to link to your evil video. These links will be new and they will be from a diverse set of sites. You’ll probably end up on blogs, in forums, and even on some static web pages.

The problem with the links you will obtain from this method is that they will probably not be key word optimized. These links may say something like “evil jerk” or “guy kicking kittens”, but they will almost certainly not say something useful like “cool cell phones”. Links that are off topic in their anchor text are better than no links at all, but they will not help you as well as a good key word focused link would when it comes to ranking in the search engines.

Another problem with this method is that you will be creating terrible PR for your website. Most people do not want to buy a cell phone from some jerk that goes around kicking kittens and video taping it. You’d be much better off creating links that make you look like an expert, drive targeted traffic to your web site, and increase your search engine standings.

Businesses that do not have time to do all the link building strategies mentioned in the first sentence of this article can always hire a professional search engine company with a nice seo package. These companies will build your links in an ethical manner and will not destroy your image while doing so. In closing I’d like to stress that you should not use the “be a jerk” method to create links back to your site.
